Awareness Isn’t Enough
May is Mental Health Awareness Month.
- 40% of U.S. high school students reported persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness, with 20% seriously considering suicide.
- 1 in 3 Americans are turning to AI chatbots for mental health support.
- Screen addiction is real. Doom scrolling repeatedly activates dopamine pathways, conditioning the brain to seek more stimulation and making offline life feel less rewarding.
Each year, we are seemingly more aware of the importance of mental health, yet so many continue to struggle.
Isolation, comparison, and constant digital noise are part of the environment most of us are navigating every day.
It is encouraging to see so many organizations, athletes, influencers, and public figures speaking openly about mental health. We are seeing respected leaders show vulnerability and acknowledge their struggles, which is making meaningful progress in reducing stigma.
Despite this progress, there is a huge gap between our awareness of the problem, and creating real change.
We spend more time on screens and less time in meaningful connection. We are talking more, but we are not consistently living differently.
Actions speak louder than words.
At The Goldfinch Foundation, this is where our focus lies: moving beyond awareness and into action. We aim to create real, in-person experiences that help young people build the habits and connections that truly improve mental health and well-being.
Nothing changes if nothing changes.
What is one thing you will do differently this month? Start with T.A.N.K.
Will you set a boundary with technology and have family meals without phones present? (Tech)
Will you commit to more regular exercise by asking a friend to join you on your next outing? (Activity)
Will you step outside, get sunlight, and reconnect with the natural world each day? (Nature)
Will you ask for help when you need it? Will you check on a friend you think might be struggling? (Kinship)
Awareness is a start.
Action is what changes things.
Small actions, repeated over time, are what create real change. Imagine what we can accomplish together.
