Transform health with social prescribing

“Social prescribing?" Not really a new concept. The GFF is on to something.

As a physician, I’ve always believed in treating the whole person. While medications and procedures are often essential, true healing goes deeper—into our habits, relationships, passions, and sense of purpose. You learn the science in medical school, but the true art of practicing medicine comes from being able to see each individual as unique. That is why the humanity in medicine can never be replicated by AI.....that topic is for another post!

Over my 25 years in medical practice, I saw firsthand how powerful it could be when patients began moving more, connecting with others, or rediscovering a creative outlet. The ones who embraced these behaviors often seemed happier—and more physically and emotionally resilient—than those who didn’t.

And science backs it up:

  • Regular exercise lowers the risk of depression, heart disease, and even dementia.
  • Creative expression improves brain function and reduces stress.
  • Strong social ties are associated with longer life spans and better outcomes.

That’s the idea behind social prescribing—a growing global movement where healthcare providers recommend community-based activities as part of a person’s care plan.

Through The Goldfinch Foundation, I’m honored to offer young people those same kinds of healing opportunities. Our programs are “social prescriptions” in action—built on creativity, community, movement, education, and nature.

Take control of what you can control. While we can’t always change our circumstances, we can nourish our minds, bodies, and relationships. I hope you will join us for our next event.
